Truck Accidents in Kentucky

According to the Kentucky State Police, truck collisions accounted for only 4% of all motor vehicle accidents, but 8% of all fatal collisions in 2012. While this number is still low compared to passenger vehicles, the statistic goes to show that truck accidents, though uncommon, run a higher risk of resulting in a fatal injury, proportionately. The leading causes of truck crashes in Kentucky is tire failure, followed closely by load securement, and defective brakes. Other common issues that caused truck accidents include oversized truck loads, defective tow hitches, defective lighting, overweight vehicle, and steering failure. While these accidents can occur anywhere, the vast majority occur on interstates like the I-75, US routes, and state routes.

National Truck Accident Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 317,000 trucks were involved in accidents in 2012, roughly one-third of which resulted in injuries
  • There were 3,921 truck accident fatalities in 2012
  • 81% of truck accidents are multi-vehicle accidents
  • There was a 20% increase in fatal crashes involving large trucks or buses between 2009 and 2013
  • The number of truck or bus accidents that resulted in injuries increased by 55% between 2009 and 2014
  • Between 2013 and 2014 the number of trucks involved in property damage only accidents increased by 31%
