Undiagnosed Aneurysm

Pursue a Medical Malpractice Claim in Lexington, KY

An aneurysm is when the artery junction becomes weak and these weak spots create a ballooning of blood vessels. When a brain aneurysm ruptures there is a high incidence of death. 10% of patients with a ruptured aneurysm die before they are able to receive life-sustaining medical care. Additionally, if a medical professional improperly treats or allows the aneurysm to go untreated, statistics show that more than 50% of those patients will die within a month. In addition to the bleeding issues, there is a major risk of the artery spasm resulting in a stroke.

If you believe you or a loved one did not receive prompt medical care regarding an aneurysm or were misdiagnosed, don’t hesitate to call Goeing Goeing & McQuinn PLLC. Our firm has years of experience that we will put to work on your behalf. Risk Factors of Aneurysm

Certain people may be at a greater risk of an aneurysm than others. Depending on their age, health, and other factors, patients may need to pay close attention to their body for symptoms of an aneurysm.

There are several risk factors for brain aneurysms which include:

  • History of high blood pressure or hypertension
  • Your age (if you are over 40, there is an increased risk)
  • Your gender (women have a higher incidence of suffering an aneurysm than men)
  • Use of illicit drugs such as cocaine
  • Certain infections
  • Tumors
  • Traumatic injury

Treatment of Aneurysm

Survival rates increase when the patient receives early appropriate medical treatment. For example, a simple CT scan can show a subarachnoid hemorrhage in more than 90% of cases of a leaking aneurysm. A lumbar puncture or spinal tap can also be used in conjunction with an angiography to detect a leaking aneurysm. An angiography is a procedure where a small flexible tube is threaded into one of the brain's arteries, and dye is injected while pictures are taken.

If a leaking aneurysm is detected, treatments include early aneurysm repair with surgery. There are two types of surgery: coiling and clipping. During a surgical clipping, a neurosurgeon operates on the brain by cutting open the patient's skull, isolating the damaged blood vessel and clipping the aneurysm. Coiling is a less invasive approach. In this procedure, a neurosurgeon threads a tube through the arteries, identifies the aneurysm, and fills it with coils. Both procedures can prevent blood from entering the aneurysm, restrict its growth, and prevent further blood leakage.
